Police standoff in Quiet Mather Neighborhood Ends Peacefully
Lots of excitement today in my old neighborhood, but not the kind you want to wake up to.
My old town of Mather isn't known for much except perhaps for hosting the annual Capital Air Show. As an unincorporated city, it even has to share credit with Sacramento for it's one true claim to fame.
There, the sounds of aircraft flying in and out of the Mather Air Force Base are ordinary background noise to what is otherwise a quiet neighborhood. It’s the kind of neighborhood where the only standoff you expect to happen is with the local turkeys.
When something, anything, else happens, it's a kind of a big deal. A friend and old neighbor of mine overheard what sounded like a gun shot, this morning, in what she later learned was a domestic altercation among the neighbors. A gun was fired, without casualty, and law enforcement quickly arrived on the scene.
The entrance to the neighborhood was blocked off for several hours and the neighbors were asked to shelter in place while sheriff's deputies tried to coax the suspect out of their home.
Residents can be seen observing the standoff—not the shelter in place orders, clearly—mere doors down from the scene. My old house is in the background.
SWAT team was deployed with all of their toys. This tractor looking contraption is a Rook. As you can see from the photos, they came prepared with the necessary equipment to breach the home, if it came to that.
Eventually it did come to that. Well, sort of. The suspect was seen crawling out of the home after law enforcement deployed tear gas. The suspect surrendered and has been taken into custody.
Let's be glad that nobody was physically hurt. I pray Mather goes back to being the quiet neighborhood I remember.
All the best,
